This calculator is a partnership between the SEEG and the G1, and it proposes a simple and innovative way to estimate the share of responsibility of each Brazilian person in the country's emissions, with an exclusively educational purpose.
It was prepared based on the GHG emissions data from SEEG 8 (2019), having as its main premise to consider the totality of Brazilian emissions, that is, all its levels and sub-levels of emissions. Thus, in the hypothetical scenario of all Brazilians calculating their emissions with the tool, the sum of the results would total the country's emissions.
Emissions are attributed to the individual in proportion to their main determining factors. In general, the amount consumed of a certain product - which varies from individual to individual depending on their habits, behavior and purchasing power. An example: the amount of beef a person chooses to consume or is able to buy will determine the amount of emissions from the Land Use and Agriculture sectors that will be attributed to that person.
However, not all emission classes can be easily linked to a single main determinant. For simplicity, these emissions are distributed to the Brazilian population in proportion to a general consumption index corresponding to the individual's per capita family income. The assumption is that, with higher income, the individual tends to have greater access and benefit more, in general, from the goods and services available in the country and, therefore, these emissions are attributed differently.
The questions contained in the calculator were divided into initial information about the respondent, and then addressed the following issuing sectors: Energy and Industry, Land Use Change and Forestry (livestock, agriculture and deforestation) and Waste Treatment and Disposal.
